World Book and Copyright Day

World Book and Copyright Day is a global celebration of the enduring power of books and the importance of protecting the rights of those who create them. It's a day to celebrate the joy of reading and the impact that books have on our lives and society.

World Book and Copyright Day was officially established by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in 1995. However, the original idea was conceived by Vicente Clavel Andrés, a Spanish writer and director of the Cervantes publishing house in Barcelona, back in 1922. He proposed the idea to honor the renowned Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes.

The date, April 23rd, was chosen because it marks the death anniversaries of both Cervantes and William Shakespeare, as well as the birth or death of several other prominent authors.

World Book and Copyright Day, celebrated annually on April 23rd, serves several important purposes:

  1. Promoting Reading and Literacy: The day aims to foster a love for reading and encourage people of all ages to engage with books. It highlights the importance of literacy and education in personal and community development1.
  2. Honoring Literary Figures: The date coincides with the death anniversaries of prominent authors such as William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes, making it a fitting day to pay tribute to their contributions to literature.
  3. Raising Awareness about Copyright: The day also emphasizes the importance of copyright protection for authors, publishers, and the creative industry. It helps to educate people about the significance of respecting intellectual property rights.
  4. Celebrating Cultural Diversity: By promoting books and reading, the day celebrates the rich diversity of cultures and stories from around the world. It encourages people to explore literature from different cultures and perspectives.
  5. Supporting Libraries and Bookstores: The day often involves events and activities organized by libraries, bookstores, and educational institutions to promote books and reading.
