A Brief History of National Library Card Sign-Up Month
The American Library Association launched National Library Card Sign-Up Month in 1987. The goal was to ensure that every child had the most important school supply of all—a library card. Since then, libraries across the United States have participated in this initiative, promoting the value of library cards and the myriad resources and services libraries offer.
Each year, the ALA teams up with a celebrity or popular character to serve as the Honorary Chair of National Library Card Sign-Up Month. These ambassadors help spread the word about the benefits of library cards and encourage more people to visit their local libraries.
How to Celebrate
- Get a Library Card: If you don’t already have one, visit your local library and sign up for a library card. It’s quick, easy, and free!
- Encourage Others: Spread the word to friends, family, and colleagues about the benefits of having a library card. Encourage them to sign up too!
- Explore Library Services: Take the time to explore the various services and resources your library offers. Attend an event, borrow a book, or use a digital resource.
- Share on Social Media: Share your love for libraries on social media using the hashtag #LibraryCardSignUpMonth. Post about your favorite library resources, events, or why you love having a library card.
- Donate or Volunteer: Support your local library by donating books or funds, or by volunteering your time.
